What is iVEC Data Analysis, Tools and Applications (DATA)?

The DATA Team at iVEC is supporting researchers maximise the benefits of applying digital technology within their chosen discipline.

Specifically iVEC provides researchers in WA access to:

  • high performance computing
  • large scale data storage
  • visualisation facilities and tools and
  • global collaboration technologies

1. Marine science

CATAMI

The Collaborative and Annotation Tools for Analysis of Marine Imagery and Video (CATAMI) project is federally funded by the National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources (NeCTAR) designed to assist marine ecology and habitat monitoring processes. The CATAMI project will provide open source tools which will:

  1. Integrate and standardise – BRUV, AUV, TV and ROV data into a single system, and standardise the classification system (taxonomy) for labeling species and environments.
  2. Automate – aggregate data using a standardised classification system before building automated classification algorithms on top of the data.
  3. Visualisation and access – promote open data practices.

WA-AODN

The diversity and amount of marine data being collected is increasing dramatically in Western Australia. Similar data is being collected by government, universities and private organisations, however it is rarely shared and access is a challenge. The vision for the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) was to put in place an interoperable, online network of marine and coastal data resources. WA has been chosen as a demonstration for a ‘regional node’ of the AODN. This will build upon work already undertaken by IMOS, iVEC, WAMSI (Western Australian Marine Science Institution) and WASTAC (Western Australian Satellite Technology and Applications Consortium) in WA.

2. Geosciences

Connecting Earth Science Samples with the Internet of Things

Observations made on geology samples provide some of the core data used in geoscience. The results of observations may be reported in multiple reports, sometimes spread over different media and in special cases over a long time period. The International Geo-Sample Number (IGSN) system assigns a globally unique identifier to each sample, in order to support the correlation of observations between reports. The IGSN converts an IGSN to an http URI, which resolves to a sample description (metadata). CSIRO has been involved in aspects of the design of the IGSN system. With seed funding from iVEC, CSIRO researchers have develop a prototype of the technology required for the CSIRO laboratories to introduce digital workflows integrated into the IGSN registration system.

3. Involvement with AeRO

iVEC is a founder member of the Australian eResearch Organisations, AeRO. AeRO are a group of state-based eResearch service providers have agreed to co-operate on the advancement of eResearch in Australia. AeRO has a variety of projects which include the collective provision of eResearch education and training materials. This project is being lead by iVEC’s eResearch Programme Leader, Jenni Harrison. The AeRO Education Resources Portal is available and free to use.

Ever thought you were drowning in a sea of data and don’t know where to get help? Why don’t you come along to a Data Clinic? There is help available at a ‘drop-in’ Data Clinics near you. At a Clinic you can find out:

  • what data storage is available and how to access this
  • how to complete the application process
  • about data ingest procedures, tools and practices (e.g. what tools to use and why)
  • how eResearch staff can help you identify bottlenecks in present workflow
  • how best to share data (especially for researchers with collaborators elsewhere)
  • how best to make data discoverable by others.

The next presentation will be in September 2013, by eResearch Programme Leader, Jenni Harrison. Jenni is an invited guest at The Health and Wellbeing Symposium “Where Research Minds Meet”. This symposium is cosponsored by iVEC Partner, Edith Cowan University, specifically the Collaboration Research Network and the ECU Health and Wellness Institute.
