iVEC offers a variety of value-added services that leverage its expertise and infrastructure.

Supercomputing, Modelling and data-intensive workflows

A key source of capabilities in iVEC is the Supercomputing Technology and Applications Program (STAP). This aims to encourage the uptake of supercomputing by the scientific community in Western Australia and beyond. To help achieve this, a team of six supercomputing experts has been assembled. Uptake is focused on iVEC services:

  • Supercomputing
  • Data Storage
  • Cloud computing
  • Visualisation

Supercomputing is a term that covers a wide range of activities, which are captured by the diverse skillset of the team. Skillset highlights include:

  • Tertiary-level academic experience – covering computer science, computational science, geosciences, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering.
  • Parallel programming – distributed-memory programming (for example, MPI) and shared-variable programming (for example, OpenMP).
  • High-performance computing – hybridisation; performance analysis; optimisation and scaling.
  • High-throughput computing – batch processing; virtualisation; job management.
  • (GPU) accelerator programming.
  • Software engineering – for example, application integration, porting, and software testing.
  • Scientific computing – numerical libraries; application-specific packages; academic writing.
  • Data management – database design; data-grid and distributed computing; metadata / mark-up.
  • Training and teaching.
  • (Software) project management.

Visualisation Capabilities

iVEC has significant expertise in visualisation, progressed and supported by a team of three experts for visualisation applications and research. Specific foci for the team are:

  • Scientific visualisation – with notable examples from geosciences, astronomy, architecture, and neuroscience.
  • Visualisation technique – lighting (for example, ray-tracing and radiosity), volume visualisation, computational geometry, and virtual environments.
  • Visualisation research – exploiting/ engaging the human brain.
  • Image processing – and HPC-scale rendering.
  • Visualisation for public engagement and outreach.
  • Capability-scale visualisation – techniques for exploring large datasets.

Consulting services are prioritised based on resource availability and project merit. Contact the iVEC helpdesk to be assisted with an application. Director’s Share projects on iVEC supercomputers are typically allocated some assistance to get up and running.

Commercial access

iVEC offers commercial consulting services to provide a vendor-independent analysis of how a business may benefit from modelling and advanced computing. This may include requirements gathering, literature review, solutions survey, benchmarking, and cost-benefit analysis.
