Industry and Government Uptake Program

iVEC’s Industry and Government Uptake Program (IGUP) offers a variety of Services to industry and government, as well as delivering a number of Programs. By deploying the resources of iVEC in collaboration with its research partners, iVEC’s aim is to help address key challenges and to deliver research-led solutions.

Services

Some services are provided free of charge, and other services are ‘paid for’, depending on the level of time and complexity involved. If funding is a challenge, iVEC may be able to help identify grant funding sources that are relevant to your needs.

Initial evaluation and project scoping

iVEC’s Supercomputing Technology and Application Specialists (STAP team) are available to assist your organisation to transition into the world of supercomputing. Our aim in this phase of work is to clearly define the challenge you wish to solve, propose options and potential solutions, then scope out a detailed, fully costed work program. This scoping exercise is typically carried out free of charge. We will then suggest ways of resourcing and scheduling the project, and in many cases find that your project falls within the scope of one of our existing internal programs.

Project work

Once the scope of work has been clearly defined and agreed, iVEC’s STAP team and technical staff will collaborate with your organisation. This joint project team will work on the assigned activities to achieve the desired outcomes in the agreed timeframe. Subject to any commercial confidentiality issues, we like to write up a short case study to post on the iVEC web site. Case studies encourage other potential users to learn from your experiences, and appreciate how the benefits of supercomputing might apply to their own organisation.

Access to training courses and workshops

iVEC provides industry-focussed training courses and introductory workshops. These enable new entrants to upskill, or to try out some of the new packages in areas such as computational fluid dynamics or 3-D Visualisation. Latest information is contained on iVEC’s Training web page.

Programs

iVEC currently offers four uptake programs under the IGUP banner :

Partner Program

Based on similar programs in the USA, iVEC is launching its very own Partner Program in April 2013. This will provide users with a bundled, cost effective range of services, including training courses, access, scratch storage and expertise from iVEC’s STAP team. Offering Gold, Silver and Bronze membership for a fixed annual fee, the Partner Program is designed to stimulate affordable interaction, and promote knowledge transfer in relaxed and professional setting. To receive details of this launch event (and other iVEC events too), please join the iVEC mailing list.

iVEC / ACS Workplace Integrated Learning Program

Building on the existing collaboration with the Australian Computing Society, iVEC is launching a new iVEC /ACS “Workplace Integrated Learning” program in 2013. iVEC will be part-sponsoring 5 students, each of whom will undertake an industry-based project in collaboration in-company. This is an ideal way for companies to gain exposure to the world of supercomputing, whilst enabling a local student to gain valuable experience.

Industry Technology Assistance Scheme (ITAS)

ITAS is a competitive grants scheme that awards access to iVEC’s infrastructure and experts. Offering in-kind support of typically $15,000 per project, ITAS is ideal for small companies who may not be otherwise able to afford access to iVEC’s services. Calls for ITAS proposals are generally issued in the second half of the year – watch this space or join the iVEC mailing list for updates.

Consulting

iVEC offers direct consulting services to industry and government organisations who are considering the benefits of advanced computing. Typical assignments may include:

  • Developing a business case for adopting technologies, modelling or collaboration
  • Protoyping solutions on iVEC’s infrastructure
  • Assisting with implementation of solutions on your own infrastructure

Case Studies

iVEC case studies and reports on collaborative projects can be found on our case studies folio, covering a broad range of applications and technologies. You may find projects with similar workflows and challenges to your organisational needs.
