Head of Centre Operations

The Pawsey Centre is an $80M investment by the Australian Government in the National Research Infrastructure program, to develop a supercomputing and data intensive science capability for general science but with a particular focus on support for radio astronomy and the Square Kilometre Array precursor telescopes as well as geosciences, minerals and resources research. They are currently seeking a strategic focused Head of Centre Operations with professional leadership experience delivering ICT Service Management capabilities.

As the Head of Centre Operations, you will assist the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre Executive Director with the day to day running of the capability through operational planning, reporting, and the provision of specialist advice related to the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre services and activities. You will be responsible for consolidating and delivery of strategic planning into operational output and will ensure that the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre has appropriate workforce and capacity in place to deliver on key objectives.

This role is specifically a non-technical role but requires a good high-level appreciation of the operations of large-scale IT infrastructure, with a focus upon delivery of research services capabilities from a highly technical specialist resource and workforce.

To be considered you will hold tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in a similar organisation or specialised facility of comparable size and scale to the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre.

Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) Specialist/Senior Specialist

The Pawsey Supercomputing Centre situated in Perth, Western Australia is a world-class supercomputing and high volume data storage facility operating petascale compute and associated storage infrastructure. The Pawsey Supercomputing Centre represents an AU$80 million investment by the Australian Federal Government, managed / operated by iVEC a joint venture of the CSIRO, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia, and supported locally by funding from the Western Australian State Government. In addition to a collection of Cray supercomputers with well in excess of 1 petaflop/s of peak performance, the facilities include a range of data analysis and data management facilities, visualisation suites, and large-scale storage facilities. The total aggregate storage under iVEC’s management in the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre includes over 20 petabytes of disk storage and licenses to ingest up to 100 petabytes of data on tape, with a significant quantity of this storage infrastructure being aggregated into one of the largest Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) systems for available for research purposes.

Its required that applicants have a degree in Information and communication technology (ICT) or a related scientific discipline. The role includes playing an active role in designing / planning hardware and software infrastructure configurations, and ensuring high-reliability operations are integrated with other iVEC facilities.
